Reminder – there is no school on Friday, November 8 with Fall Break following. See you on Thursday, November 14, 2024!

Every month we learn about and celebrate one of the 7 Sacred Teachings.  For the month of November, we will be learning about, honoring, and practicing ways we can show Respect.

We will be having 3 whole school assemblies / presentations centered around Respect this month: Remembrance Day, Mary Lambert, and Earth Rangers.

Please have conversations with your children about respect and kindness.  We would also like you to discuss cultural respect and respect for your health and for the health and welfare of others.  These last topics are central to our growth here at our school. We value your input as partners in our community and we look forward to hearing about the many ways our families show respect in our conversations this month.  This will be discussed further at the November 5 School Council meeting this month and we look forward to hearing from you.

Notes of Thanks | Thank you from School Council

Jacket Racket

Each year William Reid school participates in Jacket Racket, a volunteer organization that collects, sorts and distributes gently used, clean, winter jackets, snow pants, hats and mittens to Calgary children through the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District.

From October 18 until November 22, a box will be set up inside the School across from the office for collection.  We are asking parents and students to donate gently used, warm winter jackets, snow pants, hats and mittens (no boots), in all sizes (from small sizes for young kids in Kindergarten to large sizes for teens in Grade 12).

We encourage you to generously support this worthy project. Last year, Jacket Racket distributed close to 2000 coats to needing families!

Please visit http://www.jacketracketcalgary.com or contact Sarah Simms at sarahasimms@me.com for further details or if you have any questions.

Upcoming Events

Elev8 Lacrosse is coming to our school

We have been given the opportunity to have Elev8 Lacrosse come to William Reid School for 2 days in November. The ELEV8 Classroom Lacrosse® program introduces the sport of lacrosse and educates students on the origin and indigenous roots of the sport in Canada and North America.  The student-centred program ensures that students are actively involved. ELEV8® Professional coaches and National Lacrosse League players lead and instruct the customizable ELEV8 Classroom Lacrosse® program.  Beyond the basics of lacrosse, students will learn important values like teamwork and integrity while building on physical skills fundamental to any sport. This month we are focusing on respect and we will ensure respect will be part of this residency.  ELEV8® Lacrosse is fully equipped to provide the necessary lacrosse equipment (real lacrosse sticks, soft balls) to single classes and instruct in our indoor gym.  They will be coming on Tuesday, November 19 and Wednesday, November 20.

French Book Club

The French book club, École des Loisirs, has prepared a rich selection of books suitable for different school levels.

For our loyal subscribers, you will find our new selections for 2024-2025 at https://www.ecoledesmax.com/en-version.php  (Discover the books of the Max series in English)

For those who don't know the Max book club yet, here is some information:

L'école des Loisirs is the one of the most respected French publishers, dedicated to literature for children and youth. Through the MAX book club annual subscription, children all over the world receive a book a month.

Why offer a subscription to your child / children?

Children learn a second language more easily when the path is fun and truly touches them.

Because reading is also a family commitment.
Because receiving a book a month increases the desire to read.
Because reading in French goes beyond borders!
The MAX subscription offers 8 books a year for the different levels, from November to June. Real creation books around which your child can build their very own personal library.

How to subscribe?

If you received a brochure through your child's school, please fill in the GROUP form (discount rate) at the end of the brochure and give it back to your child's teacher. You can pay by cheque or make your payment online at https://www.ecoledesmax.com/1-abonnement-reg.php?lang=EN . Each month the teacher will give your child the book to bring home. By subscribing through the group form, you help your child's school to earn free books and / or subscriptions.

You can also choose an INDIVIDUAL subscription. For a higher price, you will receive the books directly at home, but the school will not get the benefit of your subscription. Subscribe online at https://www.ecoledesmax.com/1-abonnement-ind.php?lang=EN and fill my facilitator area number 1713 for a better following.

YOU WANT TO DISCOVER MORE? Go to  https://www.ecoledesmax.com/en-version.php

Please keep in mind that many of these books were published in France.  As a result, the reading ages on the pamphlets do not always correspond to the ages of our French Immersion students.
