Parent-teacher conferences are an opportunity to engage in conversation about your child’s learning. Parents/guardians and teachers are able to connect face-to-face and communicate openly about student learning, especially with respect to areas of strength and areas of growth. They help build and sustain respectful relationships that allow both parties to share information and develop strategies to support student success.

Student-Led Conferences

The purpose of student-led conferences is for students to communicate their current learning. The precise format of conferences will vary slightly from grade to grade and from class to class. However, all parents can expect to see actual work samples showing evidence of their child’s learning in relation to curricular outcomes from the Alberta Program of Studies. Students will be prepared to share their learning goals and strategies, present their accomplishments and explain their next steps in learning. Students may present written work, demonstrate skills and concepts learned and also present digital artifacts in Iris.

Student-led conferences help build students’ self-confidence and meta-cognitive skills as they think about themselves as learners. Parents play a key role during the conferences. During student-led conferences, you are encouraged to let your child take the lead, listen attentively and ask questions to promote thinking. As you have conversations with your child about their learning, consider asking:

  • What did you learn?
  • Why does it matter?
  • How did you learn it?
  • What questions do you still have?
  • What is your next step?

Students and teachers have all worked very hard to prepare for this sharing event and hope you will enjoy the experience! This is a special time for you and your child which will require your full attention. Please note that the school will not be

able to provide babysitting for young children. If possible, it would be preferable that siblings do not attend.
