Casino Fundraiser

The Fundraising Society wishes to express our extreme gratitude to the dedicated group of volunteers who gave their time this week to make this year's Casino a success.  Thank you so much for your time, energy and support. We couldn't have done it without each and every one of you. The funding from this event ensures we can support programs and resources that benefit our William Reid Community for the next two years.

Lost and Found

Our lost and found is overflowing.  Please have your child check it and/or come check in at the main office and take a look.  It is extremely helpful to label your child’s clothing so when we go through it we can return it.  In a couple of weeks we will be collecting the lost and found and donating it to a school with children in need.

Feedback from Earth Rangers Tyler and Keisha

The Earth Rangers came to our school this week to teach us about Respect for our planet and respect for all the animals.  They brought two animal visitors, Delta a Dragon Lizard and Natcho a small toucan – both were 8 years old.  We learned that conservation is working and that every day we can make choices to save our planet and to protect our animals.  Please ask your child in K – 3 to share this information with you.   Here are some tips they shared with us that we can do:

Turn off car engines while waiting in front of the school – no idling

Doing dishes the lazy (and green) way!

Don’t throw out organics in the garbage – we can all start a compost or put it in the green bin.

EvenStart Winter Hampers – Message from School Council

It is an annual tradition at William Reid School (WR) to support the EvenStart Foundation, in partnership with the Heartland Agency in Calgary, with helping families during the holiday season. This year we have the pleasure of sponsoring five (5) families in the city of Calgary who need a helping-hand. In the spirit of giving, we will also be assisting WR families in need. We encourage parents to engage their children in the process. Our goal of having our children participate in the EvenStart Christmas hampers is in fostering a sense of community citizenship, service and engagement. Please use the links below to review instructions and family lists to learn how you can make a meaningful impact this holiday season!

Thank you to the parent volunteers who will be collecting the donated gifts! You can find your parent volunteer's contact information in the above 2024 Christmas Hamper Letter as well in the Family Lists Google Sheet for your child(red)’s Grade.  The gift drop-off deadline is December 13. Please make sure to have donated gifts dropped off at your assigned Grade’s parent volunteer’s house by December 13th. The gifts will be collected by  Evenstart Foundation from each part volunteer's house on December 16. If you have any questions regarding the Christmas Hampers, please email Sarah Simms at wrchair@gmail.com & volunteers of the EvenStart Committee

We have three of our own families here at William Reid we also want to support. Please bring in any gift certificates for our William Reid families to the office and we will ensure that they will receive them before the Winter Break. You do not need to purchase 3 of the same gift certificates, we will ensure that each family is fairly treated with gifts.  Please mark the envelope for William Reid families as this is not affiliated with the Evenstart Christmas Hampers.

William Reid Families to support

In the spirit of giving, we will also be assisting William Reid families in need (information about our WR families is confidential). Please email Sarah Simms if you are interested in contributing wrchair@gmail.com

Repeat Parent Engagement Form

What a fantastic response we have had to our parent survey.  If you are interested, please complete the  Parent Engagement Form at your earliest convenience.

Digital Citizenship Plan

Digital citizenship is about using technology and participating in digital environments. It is key to helping students learn to use available technology responsibly in the classroom and beyond. Our school has a Digital Citizenship Plan that is updated annually, addressing how we work to build a community where we live and work together as digital citizens. For more information, see our website.

Winter Gear

Should your child require any winter gear, such as snow pants, jackets, or boots to keep them toasty and warm during the winter months, please email Assistant Principal Sheri Bullough at sbbullough@cbe.ab.ca and she would be happy to help your child find cozy gear for playing in the snow this winter.

Slide and Snow Safety

Teachers had a talk with their classes this week about snow and slide safety so that there was common understanding. We ask that snow stay on the ground and that students do not throw snowballs at one another. On the playground, we kindly remind students to be mindful of others playing around them and to use equipment appropriately. Reminder for proper slide usage was the following:

  • Feet first
  • No swinging from the rail and jumping onto the slide
  • No climbing up
  • No shooting out at the bottom

Parents, when supervising your children outside of school hours, we’d appreciate it if the same message is used for consistency. Thank you for helping us to keep all students safe.

Owl’s Nest Book Fair

William Reid School is excited to welcome our first Owl’s Nest Book Fair.

December 9 – 12, 2024

Monday & Tuesday will be Viewing days for the students and Wednesday and Thursday are purchasing days. Please look for more information from your child’s Teacher on dates.

Proceeds will go to building our library with new resources for students and teachers.

Please look for Volunteer Opportunities for the event.

Folks at home can order books online and still have it apply to our book fair. The big detail is that people need to use the promo code WILLIAM at checkout so we know to associate their order with our book fair. Their orders can either be delivered to their homes for free or picked up from the store.

Not all of the French titles available through us show up nicely on our website. If there are particular French titles someone is looking for, we ask that they email us so we can provide them with accurate information about the book.
