Dear William Reid Families,

A huge thank you to the organizers of our Fall Fling event! This annual highlight brings our community together in a meaningful and joyful way. The evening was a wonderful success and a great reminder that nous travaillons bien ensemble.

Next week, on September 30, we recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. We honour survivors of residential schools, remember the children who never returned home, and acknowledge the lasting impacts experienced by Indigenous families and communities. Many people choose to wear orange as a visible act of remembrance, reflection, and support.

We invite students who have an orange shirt to wear it on September 30. For students who do not have one, we encourage them to wear a shirt they enjoy. This can provide an opportunity to talk with children about the significance of Orange Shirt Day and the importance of recognizing what was taken from Indigenous children through the residential school system.

We also honour a Canadian hero at this time of year, Terry Fox, whose courage, determination, and hope continue to inspire people across the country. Terry’s family later embraced their Métis heritage, tracing their roots to the Red River communities of Manitoba. His legacy of perseverance, together with our shared commitment to reconciliation and respectful relationships with Indigenous peoples and the Treaties, provides meaningful inspiration as we move into the fall season.

Terry Fox Run | Sept 28

Our Terry Fox Run is coming up on September 28 at 1:45 p.m.! We’re excited to come together as a school community to support cancer research and honour Terry’s legacy. Please visit the link to view our fundraising page. As of Friday, Sept. 18 we have raised $1000.00

Last year we were able to raise $6032.00 and were identified as one of the top fundraising schools in Alberta and offered the opportunity to have a guest speaker from the Terry Fox Foundation.  We are hoping to meet or exceed our target of $5000.00 again this year. 

Lunchroom Fees

A few families (Grades 1 - 4) have not yet registered for Lunchroom Fees.

If your student needs to stay at school through the lunch hour, please log into MyCBE and complete the required Waivers. A lunchroom fee will be apply for students who stay through the lunch hour.

Fall Naturalization Area Clean-Up | Wednesday, September 30

Families and community members are invited to join us for a fall clean-up of our school’s Naturalization Area on Wednesday, September 30 at 4:00 pm.

We’ll meet at the school and spend about 45 mins weeding, tidying and getting the space ready for the colder months. If you’re able to join, please bring gardening gloves and any helpful tools such as weeding tools, brooms, rakes or cordless weed whackers.

Transportation Reminder

Transportation Registration: Confirmation & Cancellation

Families registered for yellow school bus received confirmation emails the week of September 22.

No action is required for families that will be using bus service for the school year.

Families who no longer require bus service can cancel their registration in MyCBE by Wednesday, Sept. 30 with no financial impact. After this date, fees will continue to be charged until a cancellation is received, regardless of actual usage. Retro-active fee refunds will not be provided.

Transportation fees will be loaded into MyCBE later in October.

Jacket Racket

Each year William Reid school participates in Jacket Racket, a volunteer organization that collects, sorts and distributes gently used, clean, winter jackets, snow pants, hats and mittens to Calgary children through the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District.

From now until October 30, a box will be set up inside the School across from the office for collection. We are asking parents and students to donate clean, gently used, warm winter jackets, snow pants, hats and mittens (no boots), in all sizes (from small sizes for young kids in Kindergarten to large sizes for teens in Grade 12). 

We encourage you to generously support this worthy project. Last year, thanks to the collection of donations from 50 + schools and businesses, Jacket Racket was able to provide warm winter wear to over 2000 students in 100 + schools across the city.

William Reid Casino Fundraiser | Volunteer opportunity

The William Reid School Fundraising Society needs volunteers for our next casino fundraiser happening November 27-28, 2026 at Elbow River Casino. The casino happens every 2 years and is a crucial fundraiser for our school: the last casino brought in over $80,000 that has gone towards technology, residencies, and more to support our kids and our school! To make the casino happen, we need to fill 36 volunteer positions over those 2 days and nights. We'd love to get an early start on filling those shifts! 

School Council | October 13

Tuesday, October 13 will be our second School Council Meeting. We will be meeting in person at the school or alternatively, online.  The link, agenda, and minutes will be posted on our school website under School Council.  Link is also below and is new for 2026-2027:

We would like to share ways you can get involved this year as a William Reid School parent:

  • Attend Parent Council meetings. Held the second Tuesday of every school month, the next meeting is this Tuesday, September 15 @ 7PM. Everyone is welcome! Learn more about the meetings on the school website
  • Volunteer. Parent Council is responsible for organizing a number of special activities throughout the school year. Every year we have turnover on our organizing committees, which provides an opportunity for new, enthusiastic parent volunteers to lend us their talents. 
  • Every year we need you to register as a volunteer
  •  Register to Volunteer through your MyCBE account. See Our Website Volunteer Information for instructions. You will also need this completed to start the process to get your clearance.

Reminder: Annual Volunteer Registration Required for All School Volunteers

To ensure the safety and security of CBE students and staff, all volunteers must be registered with the school each school year before participating in volunteer activities. 

The Annual Volunteer Registration Form is valid for the current school year only. All volunteers, including returning volunteers, must complete a new registration form each school year before participating in volunteer activities. 

Without the support of parent volunteers, the events and initiatives we organize are not possible. Thank you in advance for your support. 

Bottle Drive

Collecting Donations at William Reid on First Thursday of Every Month

Our first monthly bottle drive is coming up on October 1st. Last year we were able to raise enough funds to pay for our Stampede BBQ! Every extra bag collected helps fund special student activities and experiences. Start saving those bottles now and let’s see how much we can raise together! 

You can start dropping your bottles off on the cement compound along the fence line on 36th ave. at 7:50 a.m. A bottle truck will be parked on the school cement compound from approximately 8:15 to 8:45 and they will load the bags of bottles then. We will be collecting refundable drink containers only.

All funds raised will go directly toward activities and events that benefit our entire school community.

Healthy Hunger Special Lunch | October 29

Volunteer Opportunity

We are looking for three parent volunteers each month to help distribute lunches to classrooms.

  • Volunteer time: 11:00 a.m. to approximately 12:00 p.m.
  • Student lunch period: 11:35 a.m. to 11:55 a.m.

Order a Lunch

Our first special lunch of the school year will be held on September 24. All orders must be placed by Saturday, September 19.

Ordering and payment are completed through the Healthy Hunger website.

How it works:

  • Log in to Healthy Hunger
  • Create a profile for your student(s) by selecting "Add Student" and entering their details, school name, and teacher.
  • If your student(s) already have a profile, please update their classroom/teacher information for the new school year.
  • Place your orders and pay online. Families may place orders for the entire school year at one time if desired.
  • Orders close five days before each lunch date, so please ensure your order is submitted before the deadline.

Please note that special lunches are available only to Grade 1-4 students and Seeds of Spice children attending the William Reid location due to delivery timing requirements. Additional information can be found on the William Reid School website.
