Dear William Reid Families,

It has been a wonderful week of learning and reflection as we considered the significance of Truth and Reconciliation. At the heart of this work is the importance of coming together as a community.

In that spirit, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our Naturalization Team for their hard work during our fall cleanup. Their efforts were certainly on display through the many bags of organic material they collected, helping to care for and enhance a special part of our school grounds for everyone to enjoy.

This Friday, we will gather for our second assembly connected to the Seven Sacred Teachings, focusing on gratitude and humility. Fall is a natural time to give thanks for all that the harvest provides and to pause and reflect on all that we have received throughout the year and the many people who contribute to our lives and community.

One group deserving our gratitude is our teaching staff. World Teachers Day gives us an opportunity to see those that impact our society in a meaningful way. I want to recognize their deep commitment to our students. Teachers regularly work beyond the school day to design engaging lessons, assess student learning, and plan thoughtfully to meet the needs of their students. The impact of this work is not always immediate or even visible. Often, it is only years later that students recognize how a teacher’s encouragement, gentle prodding, or belief in them helped shape who they became. Many of us can remember a teacher who introduced a new idea, challenged us to solve a problem, or helped us develop skills we might not have discovered on our own.

I am grateful for the care, dedication, and commitment our teachers bring to our students each day. Join me in thanking them for their work on Monday. A small positive note goes a long way.

Please see the information below to help you plan for the upcoming week.

Traffic Reminders- Safety over Convenience

William Reid School’s location within the community can create challenges during drop-off and pick-up. However, the safety of our students must always be our highest priority.

Many of the unsafe moments we see occur as we get closer to bell time. In an effort to be on time, there are occasions when adults rush with their child through areas that are not safe like the school parking lot, cross the street outside designated crossing areas with their children, or encourage their children to cross on their own.

Beyond the immediate safety concern, I also think about what our students are learning in the moment. Our children are learning from the modeling of the choices we make. When we choose convenience over safety, we are unintentionally teaching them that getting somewhere quickly can be more important than making a safe choice.

Please help us model the behaviour we want our students to learn. Let’s support our kids in choosing safety over convenience.

Jacket Racket

Each year William Reid school participates in Jacket Racket, a volunteer organization that collects, sorts and distributes gently used, clean, winter jackets, snow pants, hats and mittens to Calgary children through the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District.

From now until October 30, a box will be set up inside the School across from the office for collection. We are asking parents and students to donate clean, gently used, warm winter jackets, snow pants, hats and mittens (no boots), in all sizes (from small sizes for young kids in Kindergarten to large sizes for teens in Grade 12).

We encourage you to generously support this worthy project. Last year, thanks to the collection of donations from 50 + schools and businesses, Jacket Racket was able to provide warm winter wear to over 2000 students in 100 + schools across the city.

Please visit http://www.jacketracketcalgary.com or contact Frances Dares at frances@urbanupgrade.ca for further details or if you have any questions.

William Reid Casino Fundraiser | Volunteer opportunity

The William Reid School Fundraising Society needs volunteers for our next casino fundraiser happening November 27-28, 2026 at Elbow River Casino. The casino happens every 2 years and is a crucial fundraiser for our school: the last casino brought in over $80,000 that has gone towards technology, residencies, and more to support our kids and our school! To make the casino happen, we need to fill 36 volunteer positions over those 2 days and nights. We'd love to get an early start on filling those shifts!

School Council | October 13

Tuesday, October 13 will be our second School Council Meeting. We will be meeting online only.  The link, agenda, and minutes will be posted on our school website under School Council.  Link is also below and is new for 2026-2027:

We would like to share ways you can get involved this year as a William Reid School parent:

  • Attend Parent Council meetings. Held the second Tuesday of every school month, the next meeting is this Tuesday, October 13 @ 7PM. Everyone is welcome! Learn more about the meetings on theschool website
  • Volunteer. Parent Council is responsible for organizing a number of special activities throughout the school year. Every year we have turnover on our organizing committees, which provides an opportunity for new, enthusiastic parent volunteers to lend us their talents.
  • Every year we need you to register as a volunteer.
  • Register to Volunteer through your MyCBE account. See Our Website Volunteer Information for instructions. You will also need this completed to start the process to get your clearance.

Reminder: Annual Volunteer Registration Required for All School Volunteers

To ensure the safety and security of CBE students and staff, all volunteers must be registered with the school each school year before participating in volunteer activities.

The Annual Volunteer Registration Form is valid for the current school year only. All volunteers, including returning volunteers, must complete a new registration form each school year before participating in volunteer activities.

Without the support of parent volunteers, the events and initiatives we organize are not possible. Thank you in advance for your support.
