Dear William Reid Families,

Thank you to all our families for supporting our school in creating a physical representation of our Holistic Lifelong Learning Framework. Alberto, our custodian, captured this wonderful image of students pretending to be rocks in the form of a circle. The colours represent the four elements of the framework: A Spirit to Be (Yellow), A Heart to Belong (Red), A Body to Do (Black), and A Mind to Know (White).

Next week, our school will be participating in Secret Path Week. Through the story of Chanie Wenjack, a 12-year-old Anishinaabe boy who attempted to return home after leaving residential school, students will engage in age-appropriate learning about the experiences of Indigenous Peoples in Canada.

Our focus is on fostering empathy, respect, and understanding while supporting students in developing a deeper awareness of truth and reconciliation. Through meaningful conversations and reflection, students will explore how we can learn from the past and contribute to a more inclusive future.

William Reid Casino Fundraiser | Volunteer opportunity

We Still Need Volunteers for the William Reid School Casino Fundraiser!

The William Reid School Fundraising Society is looking for volunteers for our upcoming casino fundraiser on November 27-28, 2026, at Elbow River Casino.

This event takes place only once every two years and is one of our school's most important fundraising opportunities. Our last casino fundraiser raised more than $80,000, which helped fund technology, artist residencies, learning resources, and other enhancements that directly benefit our students and school community.

To make this event a success, we need to fill 36 volunteer positions over the two days. We currently have the greatest need for evening shifts from 7:00 p.m. to 3:45 a.m. While the shift end time may seem late, 3:45 a.m. is the latest you would ever be required to stay.

Please note that volunteers do not need to be parents. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, family friends, and other supporters of William Reid School are welcome and encouraged to participate.

Every volunteer makes a significant difference. Each volunteer position contributes approximately $2,500-$3,000 in fundraising revenue for the school, making your time incredibly valuable.

If you'd like to support this important event, please review the schedule and sign up here:

If you have any questions, please contact our parent casino representative, Vince Terstappen, at vince.terstappen@gmail.com.

Thank you for supporting William Reid School and helping us create enriched learning opportunities for our students!

Jacket Racket

Each year William Reid school participates in Jacket Racket, a volunteer organization that collects, sorts and distributes gently used, clean, winter jackets, snow pants, hats and mittens to Calgary children through the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District.

From now until October 30, a box will be set up inside the School across from the office for collection. We are asking parents and students to donate clean, gently used, warm winter jackets, snow pants, hats and mittens (no boots), in all sizes (from small sizes for young kids in Kindergarten to large sizes for teens in Grade 12).

We encourage you to generously support this worthy project. Last year, thanks to the collection of donations from 50 + schools and businesses, Jacket Racket was able to provide warm winter wear to over 2000 students in 100 + schools across the city.

Please visit http://www.jacketracketcalgary.com or contact Frances Dares at frances@urbanupgrade.ca for further details or if you have any questions.

Healthy Hunger Special Lunch | October 29

A huge thanks to all the individuals who have signed up to volunteer for our Healthy Hunger lunches, all our slots are now full! Your support is greatly appreciated!

Order a Lunch

Our next special lunch for the school year will be held on Thursday, October 29. All orders must be placed by Saturday, October 24.

Ordering and payment are completed through the Healthy Hunger website.

How it works:

  • Log in to Healthy Hunger
  • Create a profile for your student(s) by selecting "Add Student" and entering their details, school name, and teacher.
  • If your student(s) already have a profile, please update their classroom/teacher information for the new school year.
  • Place your orders and pay online. Families may place orders for the entire school year at one time if desired.
  • Orders close five days before each lunch date, so please ensure your order is submitted before the deadline.

Please note that special lunches are available only to Grade 1-4 students and Seeds of Spice children attending the William Reid location due to delivery timing requirements. Additional information can be found on the William Reid School website.

Traffic Reminders- Safety over Convenience

William Reid School’s location within the community can create challenges during drop-off and pick-up. However, the safety of our students must always be our highest priority.

Many of the unsafe moments we see occur as we get closer to bell time. In an effort to be on time, there are occasions when adults rush with their child through areas that are not safe like the school parking lot, cross the street outside designated crossing areas with their children, or encourage their children to cross on their own.

Reporting Concerns
If you observe a traffic-related safety concern, you are encouraged to report it through 311 using this link: https://www.coplogic.ca/dors/startreport/102104800/117669900

Thank you for helping us prioritize student safety. Your cooperation makes a meaningful difference in keeping our school community safe.

School Council | November 17, 7:00 - 8:30 PM

Tuesday, November 17 will be our third School Council Meeting. We will be meeting online only.  The link, agenda, and minutes will be posted on our school website under School Council.  Link is also below and is new for 2026-2027:

We would like to share ways you can get involved this year as a William Reid School parent:

  • Attend Parent Council meetings. Held the second Tuesday of every school month. Everyone is welcome! Learn more about the meetings on theschool website
  • Volunteer. Parent Council is responsible for organizing a number of special activities throughout the school year. Every year we have turnover on our organizing committees, which provides an opportunity for new, enthusiastic parent volunteers to lend us their talents.
  • Every year we need you to register as a volunteer.
  • Register to Volunteer through your MyCBE account. See Our Website Volunteer Information for instructions. You will also need this completed to start the process to get your clearance.

Reminder: Annual Volunteer Registration Required for All School Volunteers

To ensure the safety and security of CBE students and staff, all volunteers must be registered with the school each school year before participating in volunteer activities.

The Annual Volunteer Registration Form is valid for the current school year only. All volunteers, including returning volunteers, must complete a new registration form each school year before participating in volunteer activities.

Without the support of parent volunteers, the events and initiatives we organize are not possible. Thank you in advance for your support.
